The qualification

What is LCM?

LCM is the London College of Music, part of the University of West London. London College of Music Examinations awards graded qualifications in music and performing arts, including singing and musical theatre.

Singers follow a structured programme and can work towards LCM examinations as they progress. Exams are optional. Your child can come purely to develop their singing and performance, or work towards a formal qualification — whichever suits them.

Levels

Where your child starts

The academy runs at three levels, and singers are placed by where they are now rather than simply by age.

Beginner

For singers new to structured singing tuition, or building the foundations of their vocal technique.

Intermediate

For singers with some experience, ready to develop technique, musicality, repertoire and performance further.

Advanced

For experienced singers working on more advanced vocal and performance skills, and higher-level LCM qualifications.

Beyond the singing

Qualifications that count

As singers progress through the LCM examination system they can work towards regulated qualifications at the higher grades. Those higher-level LCM qualifications can also carry UCAS Tariff points — one more way for a young performer to show what they have achieved when they apply to university.

How many points depends on the specific qualification and grade. Universities decide for themselves which qualifications and tariff points they accept, so always check the entry requirements of the course your child is applying to.
